TORCHMEN - Emmanuel God With Us
The Torchmen, Canada's best known Southern Gospel quartet, is releasing "Emmanuel God
With Us," a collection of Christmas songs that focus on the birth of Jesus Christ. Featuring tenor
Sandy McGregor, lead Jeff Tritton, baritone Mike Moran and bass Jon Hisey, the Torchmen have
made their mark on Southern Gospel since the original group formed in 1969. Their combined
experience shines through on these favorite holiday songs.
Enjoy historic classics like "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day" and "O Holy Night,"
alongside modern classics like "Mary Did You Know." The Torchmen put warmth and feeling
into each song, making this Christmas collection something truly special.
The name of the album, "Emmanuel," or "God with us," is also the core truth that the recording
is built around, as explained by a history given in the liner notes. The term "Emmanuel" itself is
found in the book of Isaiah and is referred to in Matthew as the coming Savior. The traditional
advent carol, "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," was written by a monk in the eighth century, with
each line selected from scripture. Around the twelfth century, a tune was put to the text by nuns
in an obscure convent. Rediscovered in the fourteenth century by an evangelist, the tune was used
throughout the dark ages when scripture was not readily available. Surviving centuries, this song
still carries the same message to us all, "Emmanuel God With Us."
