THE AKINS - The Akins
The Akins are made up of three brothers, Nick, Eli and Dave Akin and their father, David. Not your average quartet, all four of the members are adept musicians, whose instrumentals contribute to the beautiful sound that the group produces. Their self-titled new album is a strong work of faith in song and a great listen for any fan of Southern Gospel and country music.
"Faith Thing" starts the album off with an up tempo song featuring smooth instrumentals and vocals that highlight the group's fluid style. "I'll Be Happy When" continues the fast pace, looking forward to the time when we'll no longer need to look forward, happily living in heaven. This album also features several slower songs, showcasing the group's talent in a variety of styles. "What If God Says No" is a surprisingly serene song following the blazing introduction, asking listeners to trust in God's plan, even when they can't understand it. The simple faith presented in "Any Day Now" is another powerful message of conviction and hope. "Love At First Sight" is a heartfelt declaration of the power of God's love and a lovely personal testimony of that love. The country feel of "When You Get Home" is distinct and beautiful, telling a wonderful story of God's forgiveness.
The CD features many songs written by the Akins themselves, including their hit single "I Want My Stage To Be An Altar." The song reflects on the impact our lives make on those around us in our daily interactions and it searches our motivations to see if we humbly give God the glory for all of our actions. The message and music are strong, an impassioned combination that invites reflection and glorification to God.
In addition to the songs written or co-written by the Akins, the CD has songs from two other writers, the Albert E. Brumley classic "I'll Fly Away" and Robert Lowry's "Nothin' But The Blood." Both songs do credit to the Akins' abilities to adapt their sound and continue to deliver a sensational performance, the latter being the only wholly instrumental piece on the album and a credit to their musical talent.
