THE BOWLING FAMILY - Shine
Mike and Kelly Bowling and recent addition Terah Crabb Penhollow make up the Bowling Family, whose beautiful, full sounds and powerful Christian messages make them a great new presence in Gospel music. "Shine," their newest release, is a solid follow-up to their debut album, "Faith To Believe," which had secured four number one songs.
The vocal style of Mike Bowling, which gave him two consecutive number one songs on the Singing News Top 80 charts, flows throughout this album. "How Blessed" features his lead, evoking a powerful experience supported by a forceful instrumental track. Another strong song, "This Is Your Moment," again centers on Mike's lead, focusing on waiting for, and relying upon, God in His timing.
The album is split between up-tempo songs and slower, thoughtful pieces. The joyous sound of "Run and Tell" with its honky-tonk electric soundtrack is an electrifying addition to the album. Its upbeat message of the joy of telling others about what God has done is a refreshing and energizing message while "Sailing On Home" is a similarly fast-paced showcase of the group's exquisite three-part harmony. On the other hand, "He Already Knows" is a slow and commanding performance while "When We Need It Most" and "Tell Them That I Love Them" are both powerful ballads, backed by simple music that enhances their warmth and strikes a beautiful balance between music and message. "I Still Glory In The Cross," the final song on the album, is another personal reflection an honest, arresting song giving exultant praise to God for the cross and our amazing redemption by Christ's sacrifice.
